5 TOP QUESTIONS I GET ASKED ABOUT OPEN ENROLLMENT

When is open enrollment for 2022 coverage? And can I still enroll for 2021?
Open enrollment for 2022 began nationwide on November 1, 2021. In the state of Illinois it will go through January 15, 2022. However, keep in mind that if you want your plan to be effective January 1st, 2022 you will need to submit your application no later than December 15, 2021. Applications submitted from December 16, 2021 - January 15, 2022 will have an effective date of February 1, 2022.
You can still apply for a 2021 plan if you have a qualifying event . Having said that, there are other options available for short-term health insurance needs.
I would also like to make clear that enrollment for Medicaid and/or CHIP is year round, and although we can not necessarily assist with the enrollment process we can certainly point you in the right direction!
What information will I need in order to enroll in a health plan for 2022?
You can enroll in a health insurance plan online, over the phone, or in-person.
Regardless of the method, if you are enrolling in a plan through the exchange, you will need the following items for each enrollee.
- Name, address, email address, social security number, birthday, and citizenship status (Proof of lawful residency status may be required.)
- Coverage details and premium for any employer-sponsored plan that's available to your household (regardless of whether you're enrolled in that plan or have declined it).
- Household size and income (if you're planning to apply for premium subsidies or cost-sharing reductions). Varied amounts of documentation can be used to prove your income, including pay stubs, W2's, your most recent tax return, etc.
- Payment information that the insurer will be able to use to charge your premiums.
- A list of medications taken by anyone who will be covered under the policy. Each insurance plan has it's own covered drug list, so you will want to check to see which one will best cover the medications you need.
- Your doctors' names and zip codes, so that you can check to make sure they are in-network with the plans you are considering.
Should I let my existing plan auto-renew for 2022?
Could you auto enroll? Yes
Should you? Probably Not.
Relying on auto-renewal is not in your best interest. No matter how much you like your current plan, it pays to shop around during open enrollment and see if a plan change is worth your while. See below for the different reasons why auto-renewing might not be your best choice.
- Your subsidy amount will generally change from one year to the next. If your subsidy gets smaller, auto renewal could result in higher premiums next year.
- If you receive a subsidy, auto renewal could be tricky even if the subsidy amount is not declining.
- If your plan is being discontinued, auto renewal will result in the exchange or your insurer picking a new plan for you.
- Auto-renewal might result in a missed opportunity for a better value.
What is the difference between ON and OFF the exchange plans?
Applying ON THE EXCHANGE should only be used if you are receiving a subsidy to purchase your insurance. If you are not getting subsidized there is no reason to use Healthcare.gov for your insurance needs.
Applying OFF THE EXCHANGE means you are going directly to the carrier. There is no subsidy involved and you are paying full price for your coverage.
Is there a penalty for not having insurance?
There is no federal government penalty for being uninsured in 2022, but you still need coverage!
Unless you live in a state where they have implemented their own individual mandate the penalty is $0.
For the record, Illinois DOES NOT have an individual mandate in place.
In Conclusion , picking an insurance plan for yourself and/ or family can be stressful and confusing. Folks often procrastinate hoping it will just work itself out.
It won't!
Rates are expected to decrease this year and more carriers are participating in the Illinois market. Working with an agent will not cost you any more than it would doing it alone.
We can streamline the process for you and answer your questions which will allow for you to be able to pick the plan that will best suit your needs.
