Insurance for the Caregiver’s Soul (Because Burnout Isn’t Covered—But It Should Be)
Before We get into it…
April is Autism Awareness Month—but for so many of us, this isn’t a cause we wear on a T-shirt. It’s our everyday reality.
As a mama to an autistic child, I’ve lived the late-night Googling, the IEP-induced headaches, and the “why didn’t anyone tell me this?!” moments. Balancing school systems and insurance? That’s a whole job—on top of the one you already have.
So this month, I’m not here to throw buzzwords at you. I’m here to share what I wish someone handed me when I was just trying to keep up: real talk, useful info, and permission to exhale.
If you’re parenting, caregiving, or just trying to figure this all out—I see you.
Let’s untangle the chaos, together.

You’re doing a lot. Between managing appointments, handling meltdowns, calling insurance for the 5th time this week, and maybe showering (on a good day)... it’s no wonder caregiver burnout is trending like a bad reality show.
And guess what? Most insurance policies don’t talk about you. But we do.
What You Might Not Know Your Insurance Covers:
- Therapy for YOU, not just your child. Most plans have mental health benefits—individual, couples, and even virtual therapy options. Use them.
- Respite care through some state plans or Medicaid waivers. Yes, a qualified professional watching your loved one so you can breathe.
- Telehealth sessions—because dragging yourself to a provider's office isn’t always realistic when your life is already running on fumes.
Real-Life Pro Tips:
- Swipe your FSA or HSA card for more than co-pays. Think: therapy, acupuncture, massages, or even therapeutic yoga. (Yes, that’s a thing. Yes, it counts.)
- Check for caregiver support groups included in your community plan.
- Got a job? Ask about Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs). These often include free counseling, legal advice, and stress management resources.
Listen. You can’t pour from an empty cafecito cup. Caregivers need care, too. So yes, you are allowed to make that appointment, take that nap, skip that PTA meeting, and schedule that therapy session. It’s not indulgent.
It’s survival.
Forward this to another caregiver you love. They need to hear it.
