Disability Insurance: The Most Overlooked Coverage That Can Save Your Whole Life
You’ve heard me talk about health plans, HSAs, and all the confusing alphabet soup that comes with insurance—but today we’re going to talk about the thing nobody wants to think about but absolutely needs to.
Disability insurance.
Yep, that “extra” benefit that people click past during enrollment like it’s spam—but listen, it’s anything but.
👉 And since May is Disability Insurance Awareness Month, there’s no better time to have this conversation. Because while most folks insure their phone, their car, and even that $200 air fryer they barely use, the one thing most of us forget to protect is the one thing we rely on the most: our income.
Let me ask you something:
If you woke up tomorrow and couldn’t work—how long would your savings last?
(Go ahead. I’ll wait. It’s uncomfortable, I know.)

First of All, What Is Disability Insurance?
Disability insurance is income protection. That’s it.
If you get hurt, sick, or otherwise unable to work, disability insurance replaces a portion of your paycheck so your life doesn’t spiral into financial chaos while you’re healing.
There are two main types:
- Short-Term Disability (STD): Covers a portion of your income for a few weeks or months (e.g., after surgery, an injury, or childbirth).
- Long-Term Disability (LTD): Kicks in after STD ends and can last for years—even until retirement—if needed.
It’s not about worst-case scenarios—it’s about being able to pay rent, buy groceries, and keep the lights on if life throws a wrench in your plans.
But Can’t I Just Use My Savings?
Let’s do a little real talk math:
- Most Americans don’t have enough saved to cover even 3 months of expenses without a paycheck.
- Disability is more common than you think: 1 in 4 people will experience a disability before retirement.
- It’s not always dramatic—a back injury, pregnancy complications, or even mental health leave can qualify.
So sure, you could use your savings…
But wouldn’t you rather save your savings and use insurance for what it’s meant for?
Do I Really Need This If I Have Workers’ Comp?
Workers' comp only covers injuries that happen on the job.
That’s it.
Slip on ice at Target?
Autoimmune flare-up?
Pregnancy complications?
Not covered.
Disability insurance steps in where workers’ comp doesn’t.
📌 Carmen’s Take
Listen, I get it. Nobody wants to imagine themselves laid up and out of work. But not having disability insurance is like driving with no seatbelt—sure, you might never need it, but if something happens and you don’t have it? You’ll wish you did.
And most of the time? It’s not even expensive. Many group policies are pennies per paycheck. But those pennies protect your biggest asset: your income.
So if you’re self-employed, managing a team, or just trying to adult properly—this is a conversation worth having.
